St LUCIA

In Sweden we celebrate Lucia, the Queen of Light,  on the 13th of
December. Lucia was a saint in Italy. Every town, school and nursery has
their own Lucia and we celebrate in the morning when it is still dark.
Normally one girl is Lucia with red ribbons around her waist and
candle-crown on her head. A number of girls are following her with candles
in their hands and silver in their hair. Sometimes there also are some
"star-boys", also wearing white robes and with white cones on their heads.
They sing traditional songs.
Afterwards we eat brown gingercakes, buns with saffron and drink "glögg",
a warm , red, spicy drink.
